MOUNT KILIMANJARO
Lower slopes - views from below
Laderas inferiores -  vistas desde abajo

The top of Mount Kilimanjaro is about 19,300 feet above sea level. These pictures were all taken below 10,000 feet, however. To climb to the top, I used the Marangu Route.

First...a view of Kilimanjaro at Sunset from Moshi (around 2,600 feet above sea level).

Another view (this time with more of the surroundings, including abandoned railroad tracks)...

The trailhead at around 6,400 feet (and a very temperate climate--highs mostly in the 70s year-round)...

Montane rainforest at 7000 feet...

Dracaena in the rainforest around 8000 feet (probably Dracaena afromontana)...

Three pictures of a blue monkey (8000')...

Tree ferns (probably Cyathea manniana) at 8000'...

Heather at 8000 feet (the low end of its range, where it grows as a full-fledged tree)...

The first stopping point of the hike--Mandara Huts (9000')...

Large Podocarpus latifolius (African yellowwoods) at 9000'...

Heavy moss on trees at 9000'...

Maundi Crater (9500')...

View to the east/northeast into Kenya (about 10 miles away) from almost 10000' (and lots of heather) at sunset...

Lots of lichens on the heather at 10000'...

A chameleon at 10000'...

All of the above pictures on this page were taken in February 2008 by Brandt Maxwell.
